Household Maintenance Budget

Home Tip From Chad
The beginning of the year is a great time to set a household maintenance budget. I joke with clients that deferred maintenance will put my kids through college because those types of projects (typically water related) can be so costly. But I would much rather see my clients spent little bits of money on regularly scheduled maintenance than on something that has no “upgrade” value. If I had to suggest a number: around 5% of your mortgage value (depending on the age and condition of your home) If you think that you do not have any eminent maintenance, put the money away anyway so you have it in the event something does come up, or apply it to a long awaited upgrade. Just do something to plan because you will spend money on your home regardless; it is just a matter of whether you want it to be amortized, or one (possibly unexpected) lump sum.
